REVIEW: Jackie Chan leaves Hollywood behind and once again returns as Hong Kong's action hero! "Heroic Duo" director Benny Chan comes on board with his expertise on action, drama and character development and breathes new life into an old classic. Welcome a brand new police hero for the twenty first century in New Police Story! Jackie has starred in four previous Police Story: including 1986's Police Story, Police Story II in 1988, Police Story III: Super Cop (1992) and Police Story IV: First Strike (1996). Police Story took home the Best Film and Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards back when it was released, and even though New Police Story does not feature the usual Jackie character, Kevin Chan Ka Kui, but any viewer will know this can only be a Jackie Chan Police Story film!
The film employs all the techniques Benny Chan is famed for: chaotic situations, large explosions, and capturing the essence of the characters. The plot is tense and rapid, where one explosive scene follows another, yet never losing the human touch. We get to see a rare side of Jackie, as a man wrecked with guilt, as well as a loving husband to the character played Charlie Young, finally returning to the big screen after a long hiatus. Benny managed to capture the tenderness rarely seen in a tough man like Jackie. Jackie himself also takes on the task of action choreographer with Lee Chi Chung and House of Chan martial artists to create the stunning fight scenes that make a Police Story film so memorable.
Heartthrob Daniel Wu
takes on the challenging
task of playing the main
villain, and his "Gang
of Five" are the
ultimate destruction
artists, giving the
production a lot of
'fun' in creating such
destruction sequences.
When they executed the
police team led by
Jackie's character Wing,
many actors, including
Deep Ng, was hung upside
down from 40 feet up for
a few hours! Expect
everything you should
from a Jackie Chan film,
and the result will
still surprise you.

Its so good to see Jackie back doing his thing. For the past half a decade or so when he has been tying his hand at Hollywood movies and they just didn’t have the same feel as his earlier Hong Kong action stuff, it was more of a watered-down Jackie Chan. Kind of like they were slowing him down so that all of America could see and understand what was going on. That’s not the classic Jackie Chan I’m used to. New Police Story took me back to the days when you knew just what to expect from a Jackie Chan flick; extra tight fast and fluid martial arts choreography, tons of stunts and explosions and couple of heaping spoonfuls of comedy just for good measure.
This movie definitely gave you the same feel as the four previous Police Story movies but I felt this one had more intense and frantic situations. It also had more of a new wave generation X feel to it as well with the “youngblood” gang of insane badboys (and gal, hot gal at that!) that added a nice change-up from the norm.
I always respected Jackie and his team for not only coming up with some sick choreography but for their minimal or no use of wires. Jet Li is an awesome but I feel he over uses wires and stuff in his fight scenes. It was also nice to see some of my old favorites like my man Yu Rong-Guang (Ironmonkey) and Ken Lo (Drunken Master 2, SuperCop) in this flick. I would have liked to see them, especially Ken Lo, mix it up a little though.
I
recommend
this
movie
to
any
Hong
Kong
action
fan
and
definitely
any
JC
fans
out
there.
