While in Singapore promoting
The Myth, Jackie admitted
that he himself is “a
myth”
Jackie Chan, director Stanley Tong and India female
star, Mallika Sherawat, hosted The Myth press
conference, in the National Library. In the press
meeting, he told the reporters the he was almost sold
out by his father, when he was young. And later he was
sent to learn martial arts. ‘From low level stunt man to
main lead, my movies were box office flops. I returned
to Australia, working in restaurants and construction
sites. Then I was in HK and made it big.’
Jackie Chan said that he did not receive any proper
education. He could not even read. Later when he became
a director, wherever he goes in the world, people
recognize him. ‘Around my time, there were many people
who were hot or promising new comers, but many are no
longer popular now. Yet, I still stand here. I feel that
I myself is a myth.’
Jackie said that in the past, it was easy to be famous
over a night, but now it is more difficult. It is
because that the investors like to use famed performers.
However, if he has a chance, he will still try to
promote new people. When he mentioned that he used Fann
Wang in his Hollywood film, Shanghai Knights, he could
not remember her name. He stumbled, ‘That Fann what
what…” Then people reminded his, he showed a smile and
said, ‘yes, yes, yes. Don’t let her know. Otherwise she
will be very angry.’
When she talked about the Korean star Hon Li Nuo (
Jewel in the Palace SK TV series fame), JC called her
Nuo Li Hong . When he mentioned the pop king Jay Chow
(周杰伦), he, again could not remember the latter’s name.
‘That something Lun’ His ‘forgetfullness’ has lightened
the atmosphere of the press conference
J revealed, ‘Mallika has a really good body, too good
to be doubled. Some actions are too difficult, and we
wanted to use a double, but Mallika disagreed. She said
that her legs and her figure are more beautiful than the
double. So she insisted doing those actions herself.
After those shoots, they made her so painful and she
would cry.’
In one of the fighting scenes, Mallika’s upper
clothes were snatched off. Jackie took off his clothes
and quickly put it on for her. ‘She told me at that
time, “you have to close your eyes”. I just fooled her.’
Jackie certainly did not oblige. He said smilingly, ‘How
should I put the clothes on for her, if I close my
eyes.’
Jackie also said that all the crews like Kim Hee-Seon
a lot. He said, ‘She would always laugh non-stop. If we
use “thirteen points” to describe women, then she is
definitely “Twenty-three points”.’
In The Myth, besides being an archeologist, Jackie
also travels back to the ancient time and be a General
of Qin Dynasty. He said he liked the ancient role
better, ‘If was very fun to be an ancient. I have 1500
soldiers and 160 horses at my command. Standing before
them, I feel I’m being very majestic.’
Hope that the looted treasures can be returned to the
original owners
He said that he accepted The Myth because of one
dialogue. (It goes something like this: No one can go to
other countries, take the treasures away and put in
their own museums.) ‘After I speak this line, I was very
happy. I am happy that such message can be sent out
through my film.’ He hoped that those people (country),
who are morally conscious, would return the treasures to
the original owner, after watching The Myth.
Jackie, who likes to try out new roles, said the
characters in The Myth suits him well. ‘If I were living
in the ancient time, I should be a general. I like to
collect antiques and the archeologist role is also very
close to me.’
Mallika greeted the press with Chinese. The very
sexily dressed Mallika praised Jackie for being sexy and
humorous. When she was asked how she’s able to keep her
hot body, she answered, ‘I don’t drink, don’t smoke and
I do a lot of exercises.’
She has seen many films made by Asian Director, she
hopes that she may in future, collaborate with Chen
Kaige (陈凯歌) and Wang Jiawei (王家卫).
Stanley has collaborated with Jackie for quite a few
movies. Stanley said, ‘The previous collaborations with
Jackie are all of modern pieces. This time I want to
make something different.’ He revealed that he spent two
years on research. Script writing and scene selection
took more than four and a half year. Because of the
positive message the film conveys, the team were allowed
to film in India’s ancient temples and site of Mainland
China’s Terror-Cotta Army.
Stanley said that there are a thousand special
effects shot, as for the box office, he answered, ‘I
don’t think about box office, during filming.’
The Myth premieres worldwide on 23 September.
