HONG KONG Dec. 05, 2005 The
names of the Hong Kong Heavenly Kings were sorely
missing from the winners' list this year.
Neither
Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kwok nor Leon Lai won a
thing at the TVB8 Mandarin Music-On-Demand (MOD) Best 10
Awards last Saturday.
Just last
year, Andy was the biggest winner when he took home six
awards.
In fact,
the reign of the Hong Kong superstars in their local
music awards appear to be under threat from singers from
Taiwan, China, Malaysia and Singapore.
The names
that got called up on stage were no longer the Heavenly
Kings, or Sammi Cheng, Faye Wong, Ekin Cheng and Gigi
Leung.
Instead,
the limelight was on artistes such as Singapore's
Stefanie Sun, Malaysia's Michael Wong and Taiwan's Show
Luo.
Stefanie
took the Most Popular Female award as well as one of the
Top 10 Best Songs (for My Love).
Michael
(or Guang Liang as he is fondly called) was the big
winner with four awards - Top 10 Best Songs (for Fairy
Tale), the coveted Overall Best Song (Fairy Tale), Best
Singer-Songwriter and Best Music Composition (Fairy
Tale).
Show (or
Xiaozhu as he is better known) also proved to be a
strong contender with a Top 10 Best Songs (for his duet
Love Expert with Dee Hsu) award as well as Mainland
China's Best Loved Male Singer title.
This led
veteran singer Rebecca Pan Dihua, who was presenting the
second award to him, to comment that 'there are more and
more singers and compositions and the Hong Kong music
industry is vibrant with the injection of singers from
Taiwan and China'.
Stefanie,
for one, thinks that the dominance of either the Hong
Kong or other regional artistes is but a phase.
'The
industry will update and refresh itself (with
newcomers),' she said.
Hong Kong
pop queen Kelly Chen was more candid about why she
thinks some of her peers did not win.
She said:
'Maybe they're not in Hong Kong (to receive the awards),
that's why.'
Kelly
herself was Mainland China's Best Loved Female Singer
and also took home the Top 10 Best Songs (for Hope, the
Mandarin version of the popular Jewel In The Palace
theme song) and the Global Best Loved Cantonese Song.
She agreed
that Hong Kong singers have to keep pace with the
competition.
'The
Taiwanese, Singaporeans and Malaysian singers are very
strong competition and their songs leave a lasting
impression on listeners.
'We Hong
Kong singers also tend to lose out in the sense that we
have to do both Cantonese and Mandarin albums. That
divides our attention.'
Nevertheless, there is hope yet for the Hong Kong music
industry.
At the
awards ceremony held at the TVB City in Kowloon,
newcomers such as rock duo Soler and Gigi Lin Yuan
proved they were deserving of their respective Best
Group (Bronze) and Best Female Newcomer (Bronze) awards.
With their powerhouse vocals, talent, looks and growing
appeal, they will certainly inject a breath of fresh air
into the Hong Kong scene.
