CHENG and Gigi Leung’s break-up dominated Hong Kong’s
entertainment news last week.
The news was officially announced by both their managers
and two days later, at a function, Gigi confirmed that
she and Ekin had split up.
“We were busy with our work and had very little time to
see each other. We both thought it was better to just be
friends.
“Our feelings for each other subsided because we hardly
spent time together.”
She also faxed a letter to the media saying many things
had changed over the years the couple had been together.
It is best to just be friends, she said in the fax, and
emphasized that she treasured the time spent with Ekin.
She asked to be given more space.
Meanwhile, a downtrodden Ekin only shook his head when
bombarded with questions at a camera launch function.
“People were concerned and wanted to know whether we
have split up. We have given them the answer so that
should be enough. The cause should only be known between
the two of us.”
There were speculations that the reason for the break-up
was because Ekin was unhappy with Gigi for pressuring
him to get married.
It was reported that just before Christmas, Gigi had
asked Ekin to travel to Guam with her parents, with the
objective of getting married.
However, when Ekin found out, he returned to Hong Kong
and soon after that, the two announced their split.
In 1999, Ekin and Gigi had faced much pressure when they
became an item.
Gigi was often blamed as the third-party in the then
relationship between Ekin and actress Maggie Siu.
