Jet Li
and Jason Statham together again in 'Rogue'

Jet Li is re-teaming with The One
costar Jason Statham for Rogue, an action
thriller produced by Lionsgate set to come out in the
U.S. early 2007. Rogue will be helmed by Hip Hop video
director Philip G. Arwell from a script by Lee Anthony
Smith and Greg J. Bradley. Corey Yuen, who has worked
extensively with both stars in recent years, is attached
to choreograph the action. The hot Nadine Velazquez has
also been cast as the female lead.
Jet Li
(Fearless)
will play the title
character, an assassin who has caused a bloody crime war
between rival Asian mobs. Jason Statham
(Transporter) plays an
FBI agent determined to bring down the killer after his
partner is murdered.
Lionsgate is betting big on this
title due to the popularity of both stars
internationally. This time, they get to show off their
fighting techniques in the action-thriller that tells
the story of FBI agent Jack Crawford (Statham) who
becomes consumed with vengeance and retribution after
his partner and his family are murdered by the elusive
assassin Rogue (Li). Rogue reappears a few years after
the horrific event and sets off a chain of violent crime
wars between Asian mob rivals, the Triads and the
Yakuzas. When Crawford and Rogue finally meet face to
face it's a showdown that will unravel their past.

It's uncertain to what degree Li
will be mixing it up with Statham onscreen. As Li has
stated he will no longer make martial arts movies after
Fearless which he later cleared that he meant wushu
martial arts movies (Fearless, Once Upon a Time in
China), but would continue making action and kung fu
movies. (Rogue, The One)
From an article over at
comingsoon.net, Li had this to say when describing a
scene in Rogue. "It's big revenge. Even though I
personally hate it, it's crazy revenge. It's violent.
People revenge, kill people. Not just normal killing.
It's very violent. Very violent," Li said.
Li ,who became Buddhist about eight
years ago, says it is difficult to play the role of a
bad guy. "Before it was easy. Before you're an actor,
you just do the job. I played a lot of different
characters. I think three movies continue to talk about
my personal belief that violence is not the only
solution. I try through the film to talk about my
personal belief. When I suddenly go back to this very
violent character, I'm struggling. So you need to be
very clear you're just an actor. Even though I don't
agree with what this guy is doing, I need to do it best.
When I go to the set, I forget I'm Jet Li first. Then I
go back, even when I go home, I think, 'Oh, why am I
doing this?' So I need to know, it's not me, it's
somebody else."
According to the writers Lee
Anthony Smith and Greg Bradley, Rogue is meant to be the
first film in a trilogy. So what does that mean for Li
and will he continue to play the bad guy for two more
films? I guess we will have to watch and see for
ourselves.
